MÜSSEN | MUST | PRESENT TENSE | GRAMMAR

 

Müssen (must / have to) is one of the so-called Modal Verbs. In case of Modal verbs the first person singular form (ich) and the third person singular forms (er / sie / es / man) have the same (actually no) verb ending.

The structure of a sentence including "müssen":

Subject (ich, du, er ...) + muss / musst / müssen / müsst + rest of the sentence + verb (always the last one in the sentence)

The conjugation of "müssen" (must / have to) with an example:

ICH

Ich muss Steuern zahlen.

I must pay taxes.

Muss ich Steuern zahlen?

Do I have to pay taxes?

Ich muss keine Steuern zahlen.

I don't have to pay taxes.

DU

Du musst Steuern zahlen.

You must pay taxes.

Musst du Steuern zahlen?

Do you have to pay taxes?

Du musst keine Steuern zahlen.

You don't have to pay taxes.

ER

Er muss Steuern zahlen.

He must pay taxes.

SIE

Sie muss Steuern zahlen.

She must pay taxes.
