Conjugation of lernen = to learn *Present tense*

The German verb for "learn" is "lernen". As you can see, "learn" and "lernen" are quite similar words, such as "study" and "studieren". 

The conjugation of "lernen" in the present tense is also quite similar in structure as it is in English. It stands at the second place in the sentence after the subjective. In case of questions it stands at the first place in the sentence. 

However, the verb "lernen" has different forms in every subjective case (ich, du, er, sie, es, man, wir, ihr, sie, Sie). The common logic is that we put the different endings to the stem of the verb LERN respectively:

ich lerne

du lernst

er/sie/es/man/ihr lernt

wir/sie/Sie lernen

Unless we talk about an activity that happens regularly, we tend to use the verb "lernen" in continuous form when it's translated to English.

Example of a regular activity (translated to English in simple present tense):

Ich lerne Deutsch montags. (= I learn German on Mondays.) 

For an activity that is happening now we use the present continuous tense.

For example:

ICH

Ich lerne Deutsch.

I am learning German.

Lerne ich Deutsch?

Am I learning German? 

Ich lerne nicht Deutsch, es ist meine Muttersprache.

I am not learning German, it is my mother tongue. 

Ich lerne kein Deutsch, sondern Englisch.

It's not German that I am learning, but English.

DU            

Du lernst Deutsch.

You are learning German.

Lernst du Deutsch?

Are you learning German?

Du lernst nicht Deutsch, es ist deine Muttersprache.

You are not learning German, it is your mother tongue. 

Du lernst kein Deutsch, sondern Englisch.

It's not German that you are learning, but English.

 

ER            

Er lernt Deutsch.

He is learning German.

Lernt er Deutsch?

Is he learning German?

Er lernt nicht Deutsch, es ist seine Muttersprache.

He is not learning German, it is his mother tongue.

Er lernt kein Deutsch, sondern English.

It's not German that he is learning, but English.

 

SIE           

Sie lernt Deutsch.

She is learning German.

Lernt sie Deutsch?

Is she learning German?

Sie lernt nicht Deutsch, es ist ihre Muttersprache.

She is not learning German, it is her mother tongue. 

Sie lernt kein Deutsch, sondern English.

It's not German that she is learning, but English.

 

ES/MAN (It/One)             

Man lernt Deutsch. 

One is learning German. 

Lernt man Deutsch? 

Is one learning German? 

Man lernt nicht Deutsch, es is seine Muttersprache. 

One is not learning German, it is its mother tongue. 

Man lernt kein Deutsch, sondern Englisch. 

It's not German that one is learning, but English. 

 

WIR       

Wir lernen Deutsch.

We are learning German.

Lernen wir Deutsch?

Are we learning German?

Wir lernen nicht Deutsch, es ist unsere Muttersprache.

We are not learning German, it is our mother tongue.

Wir lernen kein Deutsch, sondern Englisch.

It's not German that we are learning, but English. 

IHR           

Ihr lernt Deutsch.

You are learning German.

Lernt ihr Deutsch?

Are you learning German?

Ihr lernt nicht Deutsch, es ist eure Muttersprache.
