The history of Sachertorte

Sachertorte is a chocolate cake (die Schokoladentorte) that originates from Austria (Österreich). It was invented (erfand) by Franz Sacher in 1832.

According to Franz Sacher's son Eduard, Sachertorte was invented by Franz, when he was an apprentice (der Lehrling) under Chancellor Metternich's chef (der Chefkoch). When the the chef suddenly (plötzlich) got ill (krank) Franz was the one who created a novel cake (eine neue Torte gebakken) for Metternich's sophisticated guests (
die Gäste).

The cake (die Torte) consists of a dense chocolate sponge cake (der Biskuitkuchen) with a thin layer of apricot jam (die Aprikosanmarmelade) in between two halves, coated in dark chocolate icing (der Schokoladenguss) on the top and sides. It is traditionally served with unsweetened whipped cream (die Schlagsahne).

Today (Heute), the Original Sacher-Torte is one of Vienna’s cultural and culinary symbols (kulturelle und kulinarische Symbole). To quote (zitieren) the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, it is “widely accepted as a currency of interpersonal relationships around the world” ("weithin als Währung der zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen auf der ganzen Welt akzeptiert").
